| Coorg or Kodagu is known to visitors and tourists as the Scotland of India and the Kashmir of the south for its scenic beauty. A visitor from the plains is naturally struck by its landscap e and natural scenery and feels as if he were in a different country altogether. Coorg (Kodagu) is a coffee country. The coffee estates here produce some of the world's best coffee. The other specialties here are honey, cardamom, pepper and oranges. The plateau of Madikeri, the principal town of Coorg, is 3900 feet above the sea level. The height descends towards the east and near Kushalnagar it is only 2720 feet above the sea level. The correct name of Coorg is Kodagu , which is said to be derived from a kannada word "Kudu" meaning steep or hilly. Coorg is the corrupt anglicized form of Kodagu. More.. |
